Dr. Long Teng is a professor at University of Cambridge. He founded the Applied Power Electronics Laboratory and serves as the director. His main research studies include the application of power electronic devices, the design and development of power electronic converter devices, and the analysis and development of power conversion systems. 

 

By 2050, China's 43% electricity will be generated by renewable energy, and emerging DC loads such as data centers and electric vehicle (EV) charging will account for nearly 70% of China's electricity consumption. For data centers, the use of DC systems can increase efficiency by more than 7%, reduce equipment costs by 6%, and reduce equipment footprint by 33%.Due to the exponential demand of machine learning, the next generation data center will adopt GPU to a large extent. However, because GPU chips require a large current (greater than 200A) at low voltages, the high power consumption of each GPU chip poses a huge challenge to power supply design. In order to reduce loss, the power supply must be placed as close as possible to the GPU chip (on the same motherboard). DC converters with very small size (very high power density), high power density (small size) and high efficiency high voltage transmission ratio (48 to 4V) are the key building blocks for this type of GPU power supply.The purpose of this project is to introduce high power density, efficient and reliable 48 to 4V DC converters for GPU-based data centers.

 

Data centers is the core content of China's latest "new infrastructure" national development direction, and is the necessary foundation for the rapid development of China's Internet, communications and data service industries. Energy-efficient, highly reliable data center power directly affects data center operating costs and energy conservation and emission reduction targets. The energy consumption of the data center power supply system powered by 48V DC is reduced by more than 7% compared with the traditional data center. Efficient 48V DC-DC converter is the core technology of 48V DC power supply. At present, the project leader is working closely with Huawei to explore the future commercialization of new technologies.
