The annual application season for overseas graduate students is now coming. In the face of the uncertainty and challenges brought by the global COVID-19 pandemic to overseas study applications, as a hub of Cambridge University in China, the Cambridge University Nanjing Centre has actively played a pivotal role in connecting university with Chinese students who aspire to study in Cambridge.

 

 

Co-organised by the Cambridge Admissions Office, CUNJC, and Nanjing Overseas Collaborative Innovation Center (Cambridge, UK), the event "Applying to Cambridge: Postgraduate Study at Cambridge 2023" was held successfully online on 30 October. More than 1,200 students from Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Southeast University, Shandong University, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University etc. participated.

 

Daping Chu, Tenured Professor of Cambridge University, Academic Director and CEO of the CUNJC, wished the participants a successful application online. Olivia Matthewson, Regional Manager (East Asia) at University of Cambridge, explained the characteristics of Cambridge and the application process for postgraduate study.

 

As a scholar who has been engaged in research at Cambridge University for more than 20 years, Professor Chu shared with the students his experience of studying abroad at the doctoral stage in his youth, encouraging the younger generation of students to break through their comfort zone and start study journey in a new environment. As a teacher, he earnestly addressed the prospective Cambridge students that more and more students of different backgrounds and nationalities have become members of the Cambridge family and are engaged in research work that will change the future. Studying in Cambridge means not only obtaining world-class educational and research resources, but also having the opportunity to achieve a deep understanding of the society in which you live. It is expected that prospective Cambridge students will understand the spiritual core of Cambridge University, and actively respond to and solve the global challenges faced by mankind.

Ms. Matthewson welcomed Chinese students who participated, and expressed her gratitude to the CUNJC for co-organising the event.

Among the 9,600 postgraduate students at Cambridge University, international students account for 50%. What makes Cambridge University unique and popular? In Ms. Matthewson 's view, the world's leading academic resources, more than 300 postgraduate courses, career guidance for graduates covering both inside and outside academia, and the unique collegiate system make Cambridge University an excellent choice for outstanding students from all over the world. In addition, she shared with the students the basic overview of Cambridge University's master's and doctoral studies, and explained in detail the required materials, specific procedures, study and living costs, and scholarships for Cambridge University's postgraduate applications.

 

The Cambridge alumni guests who participated in the event have their subject backgrounds covering many popular majors in social sciences and natural sciences, including real estate finance, economics, sociology, education, engineering, computer science, etc. During the three-and-a-half-hour online event, the alumni enthusiastically shared their study and life experiences, and helped the students analyse their target application through online groups.

 

In the alumni sharing and Q&A session, Bella Huang, a 2013 master alumna in Economics from Darwin College, Xu Xiaofeng, a 2016 Master alumnus in sociology from St Edmund's, Hua Xia, a 2018 master alumnus in Engineering from Queen's College, Tony Zheng, a 2019 master alumnus in real estate finance from Wolfson College, Tang Haihan, a 2011 master and 2012 doctoral alumnus in economics from Trinity College, Wang Lu, a 2012 master and 2013 doctoral alumna in education from Hughes College, and Li Qingbiao, a 2018 alumnus who is currently studying in the Prorok Laboratory of Hughes Hall, shared their Cambridge Study experience and current work online.

 

As a PhD student in engineering, Li Qingbiao suggested that students carry out necessary practical work during their study abroad to understand the real needs of the current industry;

 

Dr. Tang Haihan is currently working as an Associate Professor at Fanhai International School of Finance, Fudan University. He said that during his 6-year master’s and doctoral studies in Cambridge, it is thanks to the continuous encouragement, guidance and support of the mentor that he can grow into a professional econometrician, and he is currently working on an academic research project with his mentor.;

 

Dr. Wang Lu, assistant researcher of East China Normal University, shared that a series of Cambridge special social activities, including formal dinner, punting, May ball, etc., left a deep impression on her, and years of studying abroad in Cambridge brought her a rich life experience and the life attitude of seeking truth and knowledge;

 

Xu Xiaofeng, an alumnus who chose to start a business, summed up his Cambridge experience with three key words: “academic, delicious, and entrepreneur”. “The meaning of studying in Cambridge is not the study itself. It also means getting to know and linking to many alumni from all over the world.” He emphasized that "after returning to China, the Cambridge alumni relations have played a supporting role in the start of my career".

 

At the end of the event, for the six majors of real estate finance, economics, sociology, education, engineering, and computer science, the Centre specially arranged six online groups and invited alumni to discuss topics on application time, doctoral programs, professional guidance, personal statement, contacting with mentors, teaching mode etc..

 

High-level research talents represented by masters and doctors are the solid support for driving technological innovation and progress. Connecting alumni resources to serve Cambridge University and local needs, the Centre, as the first research institution established by Cambridge University outside the UK, has functions covering international high-end original scientific research projects, innovative research and development, achievement transformation, international academic exchanges and talent training. In future, it will continue to support and assist the educational work of Cambridge.
